The Story

Levasseur Rum has been inspired by an infamous pirate of the 18th century, Olivier Levasseur, who was known for his outrageousness, but at the same time was able to demonstrate elegance and gentleman manners. He was an epicurean of his time and had a pronounced taste for fine food and drink.

Levasseur Rum is a work of art and an expression of patience, richness, quality and master blending. Bourbon barrel aged to perfection, Levasseur Rum offers an intriguing flavour profile. It is a unique and rare blended spirit crafted in the heavenly surroundings of the Seychelles islands by Marco Francis. The island is still known by few for its rum, but this former British colony has always been producing rums of quality in a very rustic and artisanal way.

Today, Levasseur Rum perpetuates the mystery around the character, Olivier Levasseur, and especially his lost treasure that is said to be found somewhere on the island of Seychelles. This draws a parallel with the little known island legacy of an ancestral rum-making heritage and authenticity that combines dedication and passion.

The Pirate Country

Rum was first introduced to the Seychelles in the mid 16th century by the British Navy. It was a prosperous time for commerce, and ships frequently navigated across the Indian Ocean. This led to pirates becoming interested in the region and they seized shiploads of precious goods, silver and gold.

The Seychelles archipelago was the ideal hideout for them and their wealths. Legend says that Levasseur hid his treasure somewhere on Mahe island, and that even more immense treasures were buried on Fregate island.

The rarer occurrence of ships led to sugar can cultivation in the late 1800s, to supplement the infrequent supply of sugar. Over time, the use of sugar evolved, leading first to a fermented cane juice known as ‘Baka’. Nowadays, a popular rum drink served as digestif is the Rhum arrangé – a mixture of local rum and a blend of herbs and spices, usually a family recipe.

Rum Making

Levasseur Rum is a sublime evolution of rum-making that draws on the rich tradition of ageing in antique barrels to craft rums which are authentic in nature and of exceptional quality and character. The pedigree of this dark rum comes from precisely this delicate process of being aged in antique barrels infused with authentic flavours, and lingering aromas of whiskey, brown nut, oak and vanilla, while containing no added sugars.

Levasseur Rum is an eloquent reflection of the islands’ deliciously slow pace of life, quite unlike anything else you might encounter elsewhere – a product of Seychelles’ unique history and time-honoured traditions that places great value in the unhurried evolution of all things to achieve true greatness in the fullness of time.
